"A Land Remembered"

Patrick Smith gives the reader an opportunity to glimpse at Florida from 1848 to 1970 through the eyes of the MacIvey family members over three generations. It is an enthralling book, if you're interested in the state of Florida from before Civil War times through present day era. I have read this book four times and am very much a fan of this author. In fact, I have met this studious writer of history, twice. Step back in time and read about Florida in its days of infancy. Enjoy reading about a family that survived in spite of rough times, the elements, outlaws, and animal predators. I have read this to my class and they beg you to keep going! They enjoyed it tremendously! If you do read it, I'm sure you will be captivated by its great story and the personnae of its characters.

Thoroughly engrossing tale of Early Florida settlers and their interaction with the land.
There was so much to this story and because I live in South Florida and am familiar with many of the areas mentioned I felt a deep connection to this book.
Vast in space and time, this novel is almost epic. It will resonate with anyone interested in the early agriculture, ranching, economy and role of the railroad in South Florida's progress.
The story of the lives of the pioneers struggling to survive is woven into the land, braided with relationships with Native Americans and brought forward with concerns about the environment. Beautifully written with rich, colorful characters, this is a novel I will long remember!

A Land Remembered is a must read for anyone interested in history

I ordered the book after I read Mr. Dixon's obituary in our paper. It said that many schools are using it for the students to learn the history of the settling of Florida. It was a fast paced story which I found hard to put down. The struggles the MacIvey family went through over the years was heart- wrenching. The reader saw how the state of Florida became developed...really overdeveloped. I would recommend this book to all readers. When I received the book, I found it to be autographed by Mr. Dixon...a gift to friends, I presume.
