"This is a lovely book about what it meant to be a good Muslim in the later Middle Ages. As the title suggests, following Islamic law was not enough. The law acquired meaning through devotion, and true worship meant excess piety, less sleep, less food, and more ritual washing. This dialogue of the believer with his or her body is a dimension of Islamic spirituality which receives here its first major treatment."

Changed the way I understand piety

This is a beautifully written, clearly argued revelation of a book that changed the way I think about devotion or piety in medieval societies (and not just Islamic ones). In this book, Reid shows how extreme devotional acts (like fasting, praying and what have you) that could so easily be dismissed (and often were) as crazy aberrations were often a) quite widespread and b) made COMPLETE sense in the context of Islamic law and anxieties about purity and the body. Along the way, we get a portrait of the religious world of the ulema, Islam's learned class, a class of people usually studied as authors or thinkers but, oddly enough, very rarely as practicing Muslims caught up in their own devotional practices. After reading this book, I feel like I finally "get" medieval Islam as a living, practiced set of beliefs--not something I can say about a lot of books on the subject.

Enriching our view of historical Islam

A SCHOLARLY book but clearly written, jargon free. A very insightful work of religion-scholarship that reveals a side of medieval Islamic piety that had never been really explored before: the asceticism of the scholarly, the legists, the ʿulamāʾ. It is not just that Reid finds examples of pious rituals and bodily regimes, but that she explains them, connects them, and constructs a general view of medieval religiosity that is generous, rich, and "thick." Highly recommended.
