The Ohio boy who became famous for claiming he visited heaven while trapped in a coma has admitted that the entire story was a lie.

When Alex Malarkey was six-years-old, he was involved in a car accident that left him paralyzed, reports the Washington Post. Upon awakening from his deep sleep, he told his family and doctors that he reached Heaven’s gates. The boy even alleged that he came face-to-face with Satan and Jesus during his voyage, and looked down to see the wreckage of the car accident.

Obviously, his account became a best-selling book titled The Boy Who Came Back from Heaven, which was written by both he and his father, Kevin.

In the book, this is what he remembers about the experience:

When I arrived in Heaven, I was inside the gate. The gate was really tall, and it was white. It was very shiny, and it looked like it had scales like a fish. I was in the inner Heaven and everything was brighter and more intense on the inside of the gate. It was perfect. Perfect is my favorite word for describing Heaven.
Now 16, the quadriplegic teen has finally come forward — writing a letter to “sellers, buyers and marketers” of the book. He has made it clear that the encounters he described didn’t actually happen.

The letter revealed why he chose to lie.

I said I went to Heaven because I thought it would get me attention. When I made the claims that I did, I had never read the Bible. People have profited from lies, and continue to. They should read the Bible, which is enough. The Bible is the only source of truth. Anything written by man cannot be infallible.
However, according to the Daily Mail, Alex told a pastor at church that he made everything up but was advised to keep quiet because the book was a blessing.

Alex’s mother, Beth, however, had known the story was a sham for quite some time. Last April, she even shared the truth on her blog.

She said:

It is both puzzling and painful to watch the book ‘The Boy Who Came Back from Heaven’ not only continue to sell, but to continue, for the most part, to not be questioned.

Changed the way I understand piety

This is a beautifully written, clearly argued revelation of a book that changed the way I think about devotion or piety in medieval societies (and not just Islamic ones). In this book, Reid shows how extreme devotional acts (like fasting, praying and what have you) that could so easily be dismissed (and often were) as crazy aberrations were often a) quite widespread and b) made COMPLETE sense in the context of Islamic law and anxieties about purity and the body. Along the way, we get a portrait of the religious world of the ulema, Islam's learned class, a class of people usually studied as authors or thinkers but, oddly enough, very rarely as practicing Muslims caught up in their own devotional practices. After reading this book, I feel like I finally "get" medieval Islam as a living, practiced set of beliefs--not something I can say about a lot of books on the subject.

Enriching our view of historical Islam

A SCHOLARLY book but clearly written, jargon free. A very insightful work of religion-scholarship that reveals a side of medieval Islamic piety that had never been really explored before: the asceticism of the scholarly, the legists, the ʿulamāʾ. It is not just that Reid finds examples of pious rituals and bodily regimes, but that she explains them, connects them, and constructs a general view of medieval religiosity that is generous, rich, and "thick." Highly recommended.

There is lot of valid, helpful and interesting information in this book. However, the title is nowhere close to the truth and VERY misleading. The DEM system requires you to be vegan for 3 weeks. How is that not an extreme diet?! I understand eating healthy is a lifestyle change that would be required...but vegan?! Unless you were already vegan or planned on being vegan, this is not something most of us are willing to maintain, and if you don't maintain it wont you gain the weight back when you start eating meat/dairy again? Isn't that yo-yo dieting? With that being said, I did incorporate the detox methods, add a green drink (with protein powder), lots more veggies and fruit,no dairy or sugar, cut down on meat to once a day, and I still lost 5 pounds the first week. I basically incorporated the DEM system into an eating plan that I can continue, and I feel great! I really learned a lot from this book, and look forward to future results, but understand that it is a diet and lifestyle change.

And oh yea, there's a whole chapter on "moving", which is code for exercise. Not putting in a full workout, but tips on how to get extra movement in during the day. That didn't shock me because realistically you can't expect to lose weight without eating healthy and exercising. It's simple math..calories in vs calories burned = amount of weight lost! There's no magic pill or big secret. You have to put the work in, and this book gives you tips and steps on how to work smarter instead of harder.

The System Truly Works!!!!!! You Must Try IT!!!!

I'm a 38 year old male. I started on the DEM system on Feb. 5th at 203 pounds, now on Feb. 27nd, the scale said 184. I've lost 19 pounds in 22 days on phase 1 of DEM system. It works. The hardest part was giving up the sugar, but I ate a lot of fruit to get through the hardest part of the Detox phase. I also called it DEM-Lite because I avoided all of the foods except chicken. I would eat some chicken on my salads but other than that I did pretty well. If I had gave up chicken in my salads I would be visually missing by now. I didn't do the green drink everyday as required but still got great results! I plan to add the green drink very soon, but I am feeling really great now. I plan to continue the eating selection life style changes going forward.

This book is AWESOME!!! JJ teaches you how to eat healthy without being deprived. I did the Fast-Detox and lost 14lbs. I do minimal working out and I am still losing weight. The book is an easy read and I have passed the book on to others at work!!

About the Author
Julian Young is William R. Kenan Professor of Humanities at Wake Forest University. He has written eleven books, which have been translated into Turkish, Chinese, Iranian, Greek, Portuguese and Polish. His most recent book, Friedrich Nietzsche: A Philosophical Biography, won the Association of American Publishers 2010 PROSE Award for philosophy and was selected by Choice as an 'Outstanding Academic Title' of 2010. Young has written for the Guardian, New York Times and Harper's Magazine and has appeared on radio and TV in New Zealand, Ireland and the United States. In addition to more than fifty articles in philosophy journals and collections, he has published in the Journal of Clinical Neuroscience and the Journal of the Royal Musical Association.

How do we acknowledge the dark depths of life and yet affirm it nonetheless?

Reading this book is like enrolling in a small seminar taught by Professor Young on the history of the philosophy of tragedy, a course in which he personally (and personably) guides the reader from A to Z -- literally, from Aristotle through Zizek (!) -- first sympathetically presenting and then quite brilliantly critiquing *all* the philosophers' views he considers. Now, if that kind of critical engagement with the Greats offends your sense of decency (or whatnot), then this might not be the book for you. For the rest of us, however, this book is a treasure trove of insights and critique, elegantly connected and beautifully composed by a brilliant philosopher. Don't let the (highly idiosyncratic) negative reviews fool you; this is a truly impressive book on a profound philosophical topic. In these superficial and polarized times, it makes for an experience in reading not to be missed.

The Philosophy of Tragedy is an enlightening study and pleasurable read. Young delivers on his promise to focus on how philosophers have addressed the tragic effect, which is helpful in understanding tragedy’s turns over the past two millennia. Teachers of tragedy will develop a new appreciation for how ancient tragedy differs from its modern form, especially if Aristotle’s Poetics is applied as a template. He is particularly effective in linking and sometimes foreshadowing concepts and problems among philosophers. This provides continuity and coherence. All Young’s claims are intelligently developed and engagingly presented in clear, stylish prose.

Unusual, quirky story

Taking Sides by Nessa Vincent is an unusual and quirky story about two rival realtors, the attraction between them that leads to a rooftop hookup, and the totally shocking result of that hookup. The basics are laid out in the blurb, but the story behind it is so much more unusual. This is a character driven story that starts out normally, but after that it starts jumping from one idea to the next with hardly any explanation, and the jump from the natural into the supernatural is abrupt and a major "huh?" moment. There's not much continuity between one scene and the next, and the storyline is about as smooth as a road riddled with potholes. The sex is hot and steamy, though. This book just didn't do it for me, but if you're looking for a sexy story with elements of the supernatural, then I can recommend it to you.
