Polite society has its rules for marriage. But for Ella Quinn's eligible bachelors, their brides will show them that rules are for the weak of heart. . .
Phoebe Stanhope is not a typical Lady. As feisty as she is quick witted, no one can catch her, especially when she is driving her dashing phaeton with its perfectly matched horses. And unlike her peers, experience has guarded her against a growing list of would-be suitors. But when she encounters Marcus Finley, what she fears most burns deep within his blue-eyed gaze. . .
For Lord Marcus, the spark of recognition is but a moment in the love he has held these many years. Now that he's returned to England, all the happiness he desires rests on Lady Phoebe never finding out that he was the one who turned her heart so cold and distant. He must work fast to gain the advantage—to convince her what she wants is exactly what she denies—but in order to seduce her into his arms, he must be willing to give up more than he can control. . .
"A passionate tale full of humor, romance, and poignancy. Quinn writes classic Regency romance at its best!" —Shana Galen, author of If You Give a Rake a Ruby

An Overwrought Grudge
By Tabby1249
A thin and very exaggerated premise sets up the tension between the two main characters that had me rolling my eyes before the end of chapter one. It's the eve of Lord Marcus Finley's departure for the West Indies. He's 20, a little drunk and in love with Lady Phoebe. She's 15 and has a highly romanticized perspective of him. He makes his declaration of love, albeit a little roughly and clumsily. She takes high offense, "her innocence shattered" because in his slightly inebriated state he's not the gentleman she envisioned. After punching him in the nose, she takes to her bed under the watchful eye of her lady's maid. EIGHT YEARS PASS and Lord M returns. Now 28 and 23 respectively, he's looking for a wife with Lady P in his sites, but she's still holding a grudge and having nightmares and the vapors over the prospect of seeing him again. Even considering the rigidity of Regency Era manners, I felt her reactions to be overwrought to the point of being annoying.
The above comments were written after completing chapter 2. I had hoped that my comments and rating would change for the better. Unfortunately that is not the case. Understand that fully 75% of the book has Lady P alternately loathing and lusting after Lord M before she finally agrees to marry him. I wearied of the infernal questioning of his trustworthiness. She is supposedly a woman progressive enough to understand and practice weaponry and self-defense and worldly enough to talk Regency Era politics with men and buy her own horses, but she can't accept that Lord M who has rescued her twice, apologized profusely, declared his undying love and asked her to marry him has matured enough for her to trust him. To be perfectly honest I wasn't so sure what he saw in her. To put it bluntly, she annoyed the devil out of me.
On a positive note, the author has a good understanding of Regency Era manners, mores and language and writes very fluidly. I enjoyed several of the minor characters and the little intrigue with Lord M's lurking rival and menace, but other than that I spent most of my reading time being annoyed.

Third time's the charm
By Penny Black
After seeing nearly a dozen positively glowing reviews I expected to be blown away by fresh storyline and witty dialogue... only to be sorely disappointed. I found the writing style lacking, the dialogue awkward, and the Regency-esque verbiage overdone, making the book a chore to get through.
It took me three tries to finish the book. I was getting distracted by the treatment of the social strictures of the era - hyperbolizing and ignoring them in the same scenes. For example, the heroine becomes so overset with the hero for making an unwelcome advance while drunk that she holds a grudge for eight years and refers to the incident as a 'loss of her innocence, which he stole'. But, in the same episode, she, a lady, not only punched him, a gentleman, in the nose, but drew enough blood to spatter over her dress, and then refused to mention the 'contretemps' to anyone but her maid. That is until she was all too willing to relive it in all sordid detail with anyone willing to listen, eight years later.
In short, in my unpopular opinion, the book is uneven, and the narrative didn't hold my interest long enough to develop any empathy for the characters, which is a shame because the storyline had potential.

Good premise, poor follow-through
By AsDaysTurn
I enjoyed the sample. I made it nearly a third of the way through the book before I decided to give it up and spend my time on a better-written story. I had issues with the points of view changing mid-scene, and also with the extraneous scenes with minor characters' points of view. Those scenes did not add to the story; they felt repetitive. The heroine seemingly had no faults, aside from holding a grudge from eight years previous that was justified at the time, but should have been released after seeing the man's much-improved behavior. The hero's metamorphosis from drunken lout to upstanding gentleman occurred off page, and so the reader was presented with a fully-reformed, perfect gentleman whose opinions perfectly mirrored the heroine's. The lack of true conflict made for a very boring read. Everyone seemed to hold the same ideas and believed a match between the hero and heroine was perfect and inevitable. Everyone, that is, except for the villain. The villain of the story didn't appear until chapter nine, but by then I had lost interest in the story and a one-dimensional villain wasn't enough to bring me back. I do not recommend this story.
